Springing Into Career Exploration

This past spring, BB2C offered four different Discover Days to high school students; Discover Engineering Day, Discover Healthcare Heroes Day, Discover Mental Health Day, and Discover Law Enforcement Day.

Discover Days provide information about and hands-on experiences in career fields that students are interested in exploring. They have a chance to hear from and network with local professionals in the field, as well as engage in activities that showcase what the work looks like in a practical manner. They also learn about what the pathway looks like for that career, including post-secondary requirements and what they can do now to be successful if they wanted to embark on the career pathway.

Students had different take-aways around each of the Discover Days: During Discover Engineering Day, students realized the importance of English class for a career in engineering. They talked with the professionals and learned about writing and reading reports as well as grants. For Discover Mental Health Day and Discover Healthcare Heroes Day, we had students who chose to attend both to see which career pathway was the right fit for them. Two of the students were sisters; one determined that she would like to go into mental health while her sister decided that her passion lay in the medical field. And Discover Law Enforcement Day focused on crime scene investigation and allowed the students who attended to learn about testing for blood at a scene and understanding the story being told by blood splatter patterns.

We would like to thank WVU-P, Marietta College, Life and Purpose Behavioral Health, Memorial Health System, Power System Engineering, Burgess and Niple, Inc., and Magnum Magnetics for participating in our spring Discover Day series. Without them, these events would not have been possible.

Keep an eye out for our upcoming Fall Discover Days. Email us at info@bb2careers.org if your business or organization is interested in being involved in a Discover Day event.

A Note from Tonya Davis, BB2C Event & Program Facilitator:

I would like to thank all of the businesses and community members who have supported BB2C in my time here. As many know, I will be retiring at the end of May and it has been an honor to work with you to create impact and expand our reach as it relates to our mission. I will never forget the students, the businesses who assisted us, and our teacher liaisons. It  has been an honor to work with all of you and I will miss you greatly. Thank you for nine wonderful years of experiences. When I look at where BB2C began and where it is now, I can only be in awe of all that has been accomplished. Without you none of it would have been possible. Thank you all.

Sincerely,

Tonya Davis
