Jack-of-all-trades....Brent Smith

Content Expert: Brent Smith, Written by Hannah McDole, Warren High School

The BB2C Makerspace is pleased to introduce Brent Smith, one of our Contracted Content Experts, a jack-of-all-trades. Brent is originally from Vienna and attended West Virginia University at Parkersburg. He worked at Borg Warner Chemical for 31 years and is now retired. Brent first found out about Building Bridges to Careers from his son, a student at Warren High School. His son was interested in 3D printers so they came to check it out during a First Friday event. As he learned more about the Epicenter Makerspace, and BB2C’s staff got to know Brent,  they were both very excited to start working together. The piece of equipment he was most excited about was the laser cutter, but his skill set makes him a valuable asset for those coming to the Makerspace to learn about the other equipment.

Currently, Brent is doing everything from improving the woodshop to making cutting boards for a class. He also has a base level knowledge of sewing, vinyl cutters and 3D printing.  Brent has developed some classes for the laser cutter to share his excitement about this versatile piece of equipment.  A laser cutter is a machine that can not only cut completely through various materials, from wood to plastics to glass to metal, but it can also etch or burn designs into those same materials.

When Brent isn’t at BB2C, he has several hobbies including fly fishing, scuba diving and hunting. Brent explained his most memorable experience at the Makerspace was when the laser cutter came in for the first time. Brent is most looking forward to meeting new people, getting people into the Makerspace and teaching them new things.

Thank you Brent! Stop by Tuesdays and Thursdays at open Makerspace hours to meet Brent, or take one of his upcoming classes. Click here to see the full Makerspace schedule and register for an upcoming class.
