STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. This collection of stories aims to inspire the next generation of STEAM pioneers by highlighting various STEAM careers in the Mid-Ohio Valley and beyond. Through these inspiring narratives, we aim to help students visualize future opportunities in STEAM fields and foster their curiosity.
The STEAM Stories Collective was created by Crystal Barnett-Sheaves, a seventh-grade science teacher at Marietta High School, Building Bridges to Careers (BB2C), and the Ohio Rural Teacher Fellowship through the Rural Schools Collaborative. The project’s visuals were brought to life by Emory Spitler, a senior Graphic Design intern from Marietta College. Emory not only designed the engaging posters and layouts but is also featured in a "STEAM Story", showcasing the intersection of art and technology.
“Students develop essential skills like creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving every day, yet many fail to see how these translate into professional opportunities within the Mid-Ohio Valley. STEAM Stories aims to solve this by connecting rural students with visible, relatable role models,” Crystal Barnett-Sheaves said.
“The project is driven by a desire to provide students with the career exposure that is often missing in rural education. By showcasing the candid journeys of local professionals—including their triumphs and challenges—we aim to prove that setbacks are temporary. Ultimately, we want students to see themselves as future STEAM pioneers who don't have to leave home to find success.”
