Partnering to Discover

Students have a chance to learn about anatomical models and their use in medical training for careers.

Some career fields are easier to provide job shadowing and internship opportunities than others. One field that can be difficult for students to access is medicine. The sensitive nature of hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other medical facilities means that sometimes we have to get creative in providing hands-on experiences for high school students. This is one reason that BB2C has been putting on medical-based Discover Days.

For the 2023-2024 school year, medical discover days have evolved thanks to new partnerships and collaborations. At the beginning of December, Washington County Career Center Adult Technical (WCCC-AT) hosted Discover Day! Medical Careers. BB2C and OhioMeansJobs partnered with the event and WVU Medicine Camden Clark sponsored it. Participants included Ohio State University, the Washington County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Memorial Health System, and others. The day provided students with an overview of job opportunities in the field. Students from Washington County, Monroe County, and Ritchie County learned about jobs including surgery technicians, medical assistants & phlebotomists, medical billing & coding, EMT, and more.

During the event, a student participant from Belpre exclaimed “If the other students knew about this day, they probably all would have come!”

Next up in January, Washington State Community College is teaming up with BB2C, WCCC-AT, and Memorial Health System to provide even more depth and hands-on learning around medical career pathways. Students can register to attend Discover Healthcare Pathways Day on Friday, January 26 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Washington State. Students will have a chance to explore six different pathways: clinicals, lab, nursing, surgery, radiology, and respiratory. The January Discover Day is part of our official Discover Day series, sponsored by ParMar Stores. Our pizza sponsor for the school year is Smitty’s. The Discover Healthcare Pathways sponsor is Memorial Health System.
